Whale Tower, Lennox Head
COMMENDATION SMALL PROJECTS 2013
Australian Institute of Architects NSW Country Division
The Whale Tower is a ‘flotsam and jetsam’ hardwood sculpture rising out of the dune. Two connected outdoor spaces serve multiple purposes. The twisted roof and angled columns reflect the harsh nature of the site with parts of the structure looking like they have been blown apart by the wind and sea…then reassembled. The viewing deck takes inspiration from the curved form of the whale and its skeleton, while one watches the annual migration of humpback whales.
